Einu sinni í ári!

Every horse needs a regular, at least yearly dental check!

Just like us, they can have problems like periodontal disease, caries or tooth infection that cause pain and problems with eating and performance.

Horses are masters in hiding pain and it is therefore important to check their mouth and teeth for good function and health by performing a thorough and professional oral exam  - using a bright lamp and a mirror/endoscope.

i am a highly specialised, certified equine dental veterinarian with nearly 15 years experience.

My aim is to keep your horses teeth functional and healthy and to prevent oral pain.

Studies have confirmed that 80% of horse with dental disease show NO symptoms!

Do you want to know, if everything is healthy and functional, do you need a second opinion or are you not quite sure if your horses problems are caused by a dental issue?

Equine nutrition has always been of huge interest to me - now i decided to add it fully to my portfolio to complement my dental work.

Horse owners are very often flooded and overwhelmed with the sheer amount of feedstuffs that promise quick fixes and other magic like calmness and muscle build - it is very hard to navigate the horse food market!

i am here to help you find the right composition of food for your individual horse - or your herd!

we will keep things simple and have your finances in mind!
the absolute majority of horses are perfectly well kept with quality hey, a mineral/vitamin balancer and salt.

as a veterinarian, i know when to investigate closer if your horse wouldn't gain weight or muscle, or is tired or too fat. not every problem can be solved with food - but without the correct nutrition the body will never function well!

You would like me to make a quick assessment of your daily feeding ratio? This is the "little sister" of the complete feeding assessment, which can give you a little peace of mind.

Rations-check online:
ISK 6.000
  • You want a rough estimation whether what you feed covers your horses needs?

  • Download and fill out this questionnaire about your horse along with some good pictures of your horse and send it to me via email. -> "form"

  • I will send you a bank claim and as soon as the payment came through i will send out the results of the ration check along with recommendations

  • even though this is quick and easy it is not very accurate and especially in cases of special and or elevated nutritional needs (stallions, broodmares or competition horse), sickness or age a detailed food plan is recommended.

ROUTINE TREATMENT

Most of my daily work as an equine dentist is routine dental equilibration. Maintaining oral and dental health and preventing small problems becoming big issues is my main goal. Regular, professional dentals can prevent and even reverse periodontal disease, caries or apical inflammation. I am working only on sedated horses. Treatments take ca 60 Minutes. All dentals are being well documented and photographed. A copy of the chart is being sent vie Email after treatment.

SINUS AND FRACTURES

SINUS DISORDERS Diseases of the sinus apparatus are relatively rare, but when they are present, it's hard to miss them. Unilateral, odorous nasal discharge is the most common symptom and it often means a dental problem, too. But not always, as one may find tumors, sinus cysts, fungal infections or hematoma that may show similar symptoms. Key to success is a thorough exam using xray and endoscopy (Sinus endoscopy will come up next year!).

FRACTURES Skull fractures are very rare and usually need fixation and surgical wound management. Rostral mandibular/maxillary (procc. incisores) fractures can be fixed with wire techniques.

COACHING AND SEMINARS

COACHING FOR VETERINARIANS I like to learn myself and teaching others what you know (and don't know) is just another way of doing so. I offered this service to fellow veterinarians in Germany and i am looking forward to share my knowledge here in Iceland too. One on one training is very intensive and effective. Weather you seek in-depth knowledge about head and dental anatomy, pathology and the various techniques we use in routine dentistry and surgery for yourself or as a team, send me a request and we can figure out the best plan of action.

SEMINARS FOR HORSE OWNERS How do i know that my horse a dental issue? What are typical symptoms in the riding horse? What can i do for optimal dental health? As a trainer or horse owner it is beneficial to know more about their animals.

SMALL_JZ_24_HESTATANNHEILSA_0269_©PatrickViebranz.jpg

WITH PASSION, EXPERTISE AND EMPATHY FOR HORSES WELFARE

1

MAKE APPOINTMENT

For organizational reasons, I only make appointments in writing and I usually respond within 24-48 hours. For our appointment I need the number of horses, the exact location and the telephone number of the person who will be there. Especially if the owner cannot be there, but also otherwise, it is helpful if I can get the name, kennitala and email address of the owner/payer beforehand. If possible, I plan the appointments according to location in order to keep the journey short. The total daily kilometers are divided by the number of owners on the tour. Emergencies (horses that are acutely unable to eat) are given priority!

2

THE TREATMENT

All dental treatments include a general health exam to make sure the horse can be sedated, a thorough special exam of the head including the hyoid, the lymphnodes and the temporomandibular joint. The exam along with the patient history will already give a good idea of what the problem might be and if the problem is multifocal or purely dental related. After sedating the horse and rinsing the mouth i will thoroughly examine the closed and open mouth and the teeth. I measure the amount and way of contact of the cheek teeth and incisors (called occlusion) and then examine every single tooth using a mirror (or if necessary with an endoscope). The findings will be noted on the electronic chart that every owner receives a copy of via email. The dental treatment focuses not only on the health and integrity of each tooth and the mouth as a whole, but also on the funcionalty of the set of teeth being a biomechanical and functional entity. The goal of dental equilibration is to maintain bilateral occlusal symmetry, the physiological dental anatomy and function and to remove any occlusal obstacles and restrictions in incisors and cheek teeth. I work with diamond coted electric instrumentation and dust collection and i am strictly following the IAED Anatomical Guidelines, meaning (amongst other) i will remove only as much as needed and as little as possible tooth material. Horses presenting severe malocclusions that need a lot of work will be scheduled for several consecutive treatments to make sure the horse can adapt and no teeth are being harmed.

3

AFTER

The horses need around one to two hours to be fully awake after both, routine treatment and surgery. Until then they are not allowed to eat or be around other horses. It is normal for sedated horses to pee several times when they wake up; some horses sweat a little afterwards. They should be given a break on the day of dental treatment, but most can be ridden the next day unless I advise against it. Horses that have undergone surgery will need individual reconvalescence. Horses that have had wolf teeth removed get a week's break, but can be ridden without bits. In some cases, chiropractic, osteopathic or physiotherapeutic treatments are necessary or useful after dental treatment in order to fully resolve blockages and chronic tension caused by dental problems.
